The 16mm format came onto the market at the same time as the Pathé-Baby in 1923. While the French company had marketed a medium aimed at amateurs for the production of home movies, Kodak's 16mm was from the outset to be defined as an alternative medium to 35mm, and would therefore be used for more "professional" purposes.
