Stalls for the festivities of San Donato, filmed by Enzo Mazzeo in the Apulian town of the same name, on 7 August 1971, the anniversary of the martyrdom of the patron saint, patron saint of epileptics, for whom devotees and the sick flock in hope of a cure. After the preparations on the eve of the event, which sees a solemn procession winding its way through the streets of the town, this is the day of the masses celebrated at all hours and the stalls and popular festivities. And it is precisely in the streets of San Donato that Mazzeo wanders with his 16mm camera to portray the people and capture the most prosaic moments of an event that involves the entire village. The young filmmaker from Campania and his photographer friend Lello Mazzacane are driven by a common project that will see them engaged for several years in collecting footage and photographs of the rituals of southern Italy, images of great social and anthropological value.
