On the box of 9.5 mm film, in addition to the date, 19 August 1936, filmmaker Sergio Donadoni simply wrote the word 'Glacier'. We do not know which alpine glacier is the glacier of this summer excursion, surely someone could recognise it, but we do know that glaciers are a popular destination and there are still many of them, and perhaps none of the hikers could imagine the melting, shrinking and appearing of glaciers within a few decades. Yet even these mountain enthusiasts belong to the human race whose aptitude for climbing, getting everywhere and tending to cause environmental destruction is well known. Without realising it and often with a smile, like these happy hikers of the 1930s, dazzled by the light reflected on the ice. Seeing them today, they seem to have arrived on a planet that is no longer ours, alas.
