On 19 April 1956, the wedding of the century took place, that between Grace Kelly and Prince Rainieri III of Monaco. American flags and royal banners framed the streets of the Principality, which was preparing to welcome Monegasques, journalists (1800!) and tourists from all over together with half of Hollywood. A filmed wedding, the first royal wedding to be broadcast on television: more than 30 million people around the world watched the union dreamily from their homes. Those who did not stay at home were the Buratti Zanchi family, who were in Monte Carlo for the occasion, giving us today the 16mm images of the princess' farewell. Grace Kelly is in the car, shots in the distance immortalise her for a few seconds from which we can make out the iconic dress by Helene Rose, a gift from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which, however, will not be used to bring the Oscar-winning actress back to Hollywood.
