Early silent films, the cost of film and sound recording

Rinaldi recalls some technical aspects of filming: the first films were silent and only later did he begin to add sound with the help of a tape recorder. This is why he immediately started to devise handcrafted solutions to give his films a narrative line with handwritten signs and titles. Filming and editing required time and effort, but the cost of film and development time were the most expensive elements of the filmmaking business.
