In spring 1967 Massimo Bacigalupo was approached by Alfredo Leonardi with the idea of founding the Cooperativa del Cinema Indipendente in Rome. Founded in 1967 in Naples, but soon moved to Rome with the aim of gathering authors of Italian experimental and underground cinema and distributing the films, the cooperative was inspired by what had already been done by other similar structures in the world such as the Film-Makers' Cooperative in New York or the London Film-Makers' Co-op.
