In order to fulfil the three main characteristics (cost reduction, ergonomics of the medium and attractiveness to the amateur audience) the small-gauge cinema also had to fulfil the safety of the users and the contexts in which it was used. Being conceived as a medium to be worked with in private spaces, it was indeed necessary that the material differed from that of the industrial format and was therefore not highly inflammable (unlike the nitrite of which the 35mm was composed). Thus, the first formats were born, which experimented with the use of non-flammable materials but hardly fulfilled the other characteristics being sometimes too expensive or sometimes too large in size. In fact, it was only the Pathé Baby format that was the first to succeed in grasping these three fundamental requirements.
