There are different directions and different ways of understanding experimentalism among the critics and commentators of the time. While on the one hand there are high hopes for amateur filmmakers and their ability to continue to experiment with cinema, on the other hand there is also a strong and recurring denunciation of the low level found at amateur film festivals. Very often films are strongly criticised and the selection is judged as sometimes good, sometimes uninteresting if not explicitly bad. This varies from year to year and depending on the landscape at the various amateur festivals.
