The Italian underground cinema breaks a balance with the common conception of amateur cinema. Personalities such as Massimo Bacigalupo or Gianfranco Brebbia experiment with a use of the small-gauge cinema that diversifies the panorama of cinema amateur production. While wanting to break away from the dilettantish meaning of the term 'amateur', experimental artists and filmmakers maintain a strong link with the more private and 'familiar' dimension of the contexts in which this type of cinema is distributed and enjoyed.
