Bologna, a woman and a teenager read the headlines of the Resto del Carlino: "L'addio ai tram"... "The last tram", "On leave at eighty-three"... This is the incipit of Oreste Baldi's L'ultimo tram, shot on 8mm film and later soundtracked. The performers are his wife and son. The poignant music of Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt accompanies the images. This is followed by the filming of trams in the old city centre and the outskirts of Bologna, in the midst of chaotic urban traffic, by now cars rule the roost, step aside old tram, your time has come. This is indeed a historic date, 3 November 1963, the day of the last tram run. The citizens and authorities are at the terminus and take part in a real collective ritual, which Baldi films as if it were a funeral. There is the awareness of saying goodbye to the end of a piece of the city's glorious history, but also a piece of one's everyday life that is leaving. The music swells, the dry leaves are carried away by the wind. Will the tram's place be taken by the double-decker bus that we see in the middle of traffic at one point? Will the tram ever return to the city? There is no time to answer these questions, as the tram leaves, like leaves in the wind.
