Milan, Sunday 11 November 1928, it is a day in late autumn. Giuseppe Baldassini filmed his little son Luciano and family friend Beppe in Pathé Baby in Piazza Oberdan and on the Bastioni di Porta Venezia: the two walk along its avenues and steps. At the end of the short film, which lasts just over a minute, there is footage of the toll booths at Porta Venezia, from where people once entered the city on foot or on carts. Now the ramparts are a public park, a favourite of Baldassini who frequented and filmed it a great deal in the late 1920s. Even the last shots, towards dusk, are dedicated to the two protagonists, who are always holding hands, and the glimpses of the Piazza Oberdan tram route and the foggy boulevards. We are in Milan, but above all we are in a film by Guglielmo Baldassini, and one wonders if that patina is the autumn mist or some effect of homemade craftsmanship. Maybe that very evening, back home, and after eating a warm risotto with saffron and ossobuco.
