At 19:34 on Sunday 23 November 1980, the earth shook in southern Italy, between Campania and Basilicata. It is the terrible Irpinia earthquake that causes just under 3,000 deaths, collapses, the destruction of entire villages, and leaves hundreds of thousands homeless, also seriously affecting Piano di Sorrento, which we see in this Super8 reportage by Ermanno Acanfora. In Acanfora's amateur film, a genuine local newsreel, edited with sound and stentorian voice commentary, the moment of the earthquake and the days that followed are recalled. "10 dead 37 injured 1,600 homeless 620 damaged buildings, this is the tragic balance of the earthquake of 23 November 1980. An earthquake that destroyed houses, killed people, plunged the country into a situation of emergency and fear'. Amidst visions of collapsing houses and uplifting messages of hope: "The immediate needs of the population were too great, but in spite of everything, it was soon possible to give everyone shelter, while in the meantime, technicians and experts worked tirelessly to survey the many buildings damaged by the earthquake. Every effort is made to meet the most urgent needs of the earthquake victims, and in the meantime, the first relief supplies arrive."
