Adriano Aprà

Director, actor, screenwriter, critic and scholar, Adriano Aprà was born in Rome in 1940. His activity within the film context represents a point of reference for the discovery of new authors and new trends in contemporary cinema. A protagonist of the wave of Italian experimental cinema in the 1970s, Aprà became part of the direction of Filmstudio 70: a centre for research and cultural elaboration where he experimented with new artistic and critical proposals and deepened the relations of cinema with other arts and media. Interested in experimental trends and experiences, he became the promoter of a series of important reviews and activities, among which the legendary Dimensione Super8 (Rome, Filmstudio, 1975) stands out here - in terms of the project's editorial interest. His work in contact with the experimenters of the time who, within the Roman circles of the Cooperative and experimental amateurism, used small gauge cinema to make films, makes him a very important point of reference for understanding and bearing witness to a season that had exhausted itself in the space of not many years but was full of experiences to be rediscovered and recovered. Apra's interest in experimental practices is carried on beyond the experience of the 1970s and is part of the "Fuorinorma" project which, active since 2017, has the interest of bringing out the experimental and neo-experimental paths of contemporary Italian cinema.
